Advances in Analytics Help Pratt & Whitney Improve Engine Performance
ORLANDO, FLA., TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 2017

Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), is building on a more than 15-year investment in its Advanced Diagnostics & Engine Management (ADEM™) tool to help operators better monitor and maintain their engine fleets, including the PurePower® Geared Turbofan ™ (GTF) engine.

"What's different with the ADEM system for the GTF family of engines is the size of the data stream, and the resulting analysis we can perform to support our customers," said Frank Albert, general manager of Engine Health and Data Services, Pratt & Whitney. "We're collecting significantly more data at different times in the flight envelope, such as at engine start, climb, descent, taxi and engine shut down. With this expanded capability, we have a broader understanding of engine performance across a wider time period and under different flight conditions. This, combined with advanced analytics capabilities enhances our ability for early detection and notification of performance shifts, enabling proactive and targeted maintenance."

ADEM manages real-time health data of thousands of commercial engines – transmitted to the ground during flight – 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing the ability to spot operational trends and maintenance issues early.

"We have continuously improved the capabilities of the ADEM system, built on a mature foundation and investment driven by new development initiatives, lessons-learned and customer input," Albert said.

ADEM is one of several advanced analytics offerings available through Pratt & Whitney's new EngineWise service brand, launched in April.

ADEM offers a suite of Web-based tools available to customers through the Pratt & Whitney FleetCare™ portal. Customers can utilize ADEM to monitor engine performance internally, or through a team at Pratt & Whitney that monitors and analyzes the data.

"The system assists us in identifying any adverse trends or performance shifts in the engine," Albert said. "And in monitoring engines across different customers, we can isolate issues for a specific engine, as well as have the ability to look across all monitored engines to identify potential fleet issues that an individual customer may not be able to see on their own."
